Via Flaminia - Caesar's Waters - Scheggia

WATERS AND PARKS
Our last stop before reaching the border with the Marche Region is the Passo della Scheggia, (the Shard Pass) which is 630 meters above sea level. The Roman legions once passed through there and we continue to pass through there today because this type of rocky terrain has not allowed for modifications to the original path. We are now in the Parco Regionale del Monte Cucco (Regional Park of Monte Cucco) which is rich with Roman vestiges, such as the Ponte di Voragine (Chasm Bridge). Here, in the “belly” of Umbria, the troops could refresh themselves at the ancient spring of Motette, which surfaces in Scheggia and – as we have seen with all of the springs so far – whose location was most likely a determining factor in Caius Flaminius’s choice for the site when he was appointed to the task of connecting Rome and Ariminum.
