Via Flaminia - Caesar's Waters - Nocera Umbra
|
NUCERIA CAMELLARIA
The first spring during the reign of the Caesars, which is located in Nocera Umbra. Established by the Umbrians in the 6th century BC, and later made into a Roman military station, the city of Nocera has been known for centuries for its therapeutic mineral waters and for its white clay, also called “Terra di Nocera”, renowned for its cosmetic and medicinal use. Strabone states that the clay is also useful for lining wooden vases which can hold water. It is also to Nocera Umbra where, in September of 1226, a dying St. Francis made his final trip which would bring him back to Assisi for the last time. The Roman tradition of the baths and the Franciscan journey cross paths once again in this magical Umbrian territory and are remembered by the natives of Nocera Umbra in August during the Festa delle Acque (Festival of the Waters), and in September in the recreation of the final trip of “il Poverello”, St. Francis.
